First Session

First Session: Friday 8th November 2013

So today was our first time at looking into 'Theater of Cruelty' and especially a practitioner called Antonin Artaud.

When we started, we were asked to think about what 'Theater of Cruelty' actually was. We all came up with our theories, but eventually, we came to the conclusion that it was about making not only the audience, but also the actors fell uncomfortable, out of place, uneasy, ect. I can see how this may have a good impact on our installation theater performance, as it would make it more of a surreal experience.

As a starter activity, we were asked to get into groups and think about weirdest dream and make it a reality. Whilst doing this, we had to apply some sort of 'Theater of Cruelty' aspects, so our group decided that I should scream at the end. When it came to the scream, I forced it out; so it wasn't very real, or believable. At the end of the session, as our homework, we had to work on our performance for next week to see if we could develop any part we were given feedback to improve on.

Personally, I'm not to sure how I feel about doing this, but I can try it and at the end I'll be able to say yeah I worked at and give my opinion. Mainly, I'm looking forward to seeing what skills I will be able to develop throughout these sessions and how as a performer it will affect me.

  1. Excellent initial thought Leah. So far you have approached this brief with integrity and I don't have any concerns about how you will develop or take on feedback from me or peers. The questions you need to ask yourself is how you will deal with the subject material that you will research and what skills you will need to develop in order to meet the brief! Keep the good work going!
